myGovID changes to myID

The recent name change of the MyGovID system to MyID, is a timely reminder for accountants and bookkeepers to keep vigilant with email scams growing worse.

To prevent confusion with myGov, the MyGovID system changes its name to MyID, as a next step towards a robust way to protect Australians from online scams.

While no immediate action is needed, with the app automatically updating, the change coincides with an announcement from the ATO that scammers are trying to trick people to reconfirm their details via a link.

The link directs users to a fraudulent myGov sign in page designed to steal personal information, including myGov sign in credentials.

Watch out for email scams related to myID name change

The news comes off the back of earlier ABN reports related to the Digital ID system about scammers targeting bookkeepers, highlighting the importance of the most robust security measures

With accountants and bookkeepers among the most vulnerable professions to cyber-attacks, ABN Director Peter Thorp recommends vigilance.

“It almost seems predictable that a change to the digital verification system brings out the scammers,” says Peter. “It’s important that bookkeepers are on the lookout as history tells us that our profession is going to get targeted.”

“It is helpful that the ATO is being upfront about these concerns, making agents more aware of the risks,” continues Peter.  “We all need to share responsibility to protect our data and use double factor identification and secure passwords.”

The ATO offers advice: No need to reconfirm your details

Emphasising that there is no need to reconfirm your details, the ATO recommends the best thing to do is not click on any emails that say otherwise.

To help protect yourself:

  • Don’t click on suspicious links, open attachments or download any files from suspicious emails or SMS. The ATO will never send an unsolicited SMS that contains a hyperlink.
  • When logging in to an online service with myID, ensure that the URL displayed in your browser includes ‘https://www.myID.gov.au’ or ‘https://myID.gov.au.
