Consider the 4 Page Approach to Managing Your Team
Managing or creating a high performing team is always a challenging proposition. Consider the following process to performance manage people within your team who aren’t performing to the standards you set. This methodology is called the 4 Page Approach:
First Page
Provide your underperforming employee with an A4 piece of paper and ask them to write down what they will do in the next 90 days to improve their performance in the business. Provide some guidance about what issues they have had but the key is to ensure they really own the actions they will take to improve.
Second Page
Next provide the employee with a page that asks them to list down the things they need from you to enable them to achieve the things set out in page 1. Usually, this will be things like training.
Third Page
On the third A4 page, ask them to write down what reward they would like if they fulfil the obligations they set out on the 1st page. Obviously these should be reasonable, and in most cases they will be. However, asking the employee to set these, empowers the employee to be rewarded by things they are actually motivated by.
Fourth Page
On the final page, ask the employee to write down what the consequences should be if you fulfil your obligations from the 2nd page, but they do not meet their obligations under the 1st page. Usually, this should be termination.
Research indicates that 80% of team members who should not be in your business will resign within that 90 day period. If you are struggling with an employee but want to give them an opportunity to prove their worth to your business, I highly recommend the above approach and sticking to the outcome- whatever that may be. I look forward to hearing your stories from using the above approach.
