By now, we have all been aware of the scam emails purporting to be from the ATO asking for key financial information including Tax File Numbers. However, there is now a new scam doing the rounds involving the ATO.
The new scam involves an attempt to intimidate people into paying a fake tax debt over the phone.
“This scam is particularly concerning because it threatens taxpayers with legal action or arrest if they do not immediately hand over money, and their personal financial details, over the phone,” said ATO Chief Technology Officer, Todd Heather.
If you receive a phone call from the ATO relating to a debt and you feel uncomfortable, we suggest either asking the ATO to call your tax agent or you can request the callers name and phone them back through the ATO’s switchboard on 13 28 69.
The ATO have also introduced another initiative to increase community awareness of scams via a new video campaign. There are some helpful tips to protect personal information at https://www.ato.gov.au/General/The-fight-against-tax-crime/Our-focus/Identity-crime/.
