A summary of the upcoming changes to the small business write-offs
In my experience, many small business owners find it difficult to keep up with all the latest tax changes – be they legislative or new ATO rulings. I can vouch for the fact that, even as a Tax Agent, it’s not easy keeping up!
One change that you and your small business clients should be aware of though is the upcoming abolition of the following small business write-offs:
While you will still be able to write off the full value of these assets eventually, the changes mean the write-off will be over a longer period, and therefore will impact your cash flow.
The start date for these changes has just been announced as 1 January 2014. So, if you are contemplating low cost equipment or vehicle purchases, you may wish to bring forward your purchase before this date. Around our office, for instance, new purchases of printers, computers and furniture will all qualify.
Given the importance of cash flow to small business and the still fragile state of the economy, I find it a little disappointing that this reform is on the table. However, if you or your clients get in quick, you can take advantage of the current, more generous rules.
