Information for Employee Bookkeepers

Who We Are

Australian Bookkeepers Network (ABN) helps bookkeepers build bigger and better businesses by providing them with the right support, tools and resources. ABN has served the bookkeeping industry since 2001 and in that time has grown to become Australia’s largest private representative body for self-employed and contract bookkeepers.

ABN is headed by five directors who have the very enjoyable role of driving forward the company at the strategic level and innovating its ever growing range of products and services. The directors have been actively involved in the bookkeeping industry for nearly a decade. Of these five directors, two are Chartered Accountants and two are CPAs. The fifth director, Leanne Lewis, is the operational lifeblood of ABN and the primary contact point for our members. In addition to the five directors, ABN also boasts an enthusiastic team of five staff in our Member Services division. Please visit our Meet the ABN Team page for further details.

What We Do

For an affordable membership price of $38.50 per month, ABN provides you with access to a vast range of products and services which:
  • Improve your knowledge;
  • Streamline your business;
  • Increase your profit;
  • Expand your horizons;  and
  • Provide member benefits.
For a more detailed description, either download our membership guide titled Making the Most Out of ABN, or choose from within the Products & Services menu of this website.

Benefits of an ABN Membership for Employee Bookkeepers

1. Benefit from the training and technical resources which ABN provides. While the accounting industry offers numerous training opportunities for accountants, there are not many training opportunities available to bookkeepers. Our technical bulletins are a fantastic way of staying up to date on the coalface issues that affect day-to-day bookkeeping, such as GST treatments, BAS treatments and pro forma journals. For a sample of one of our technical bulletins Bookkeepers Knowledge Base, click here. Our industry bulletins keep you abreast of legislative changes affecting bookkeeping, Tax Office pronouncements, industry trends, etc. For a sample of one of our industry bulletins, Bookies Bulletin, click here.

2. A ready made quality assurance framework for BAS preparation. Our BAS Wizard Partner Program, a quality assurance framework which is in accordance with Tax Office guidelines, is used by over 700 bookkeepers around Australia to enable them to legally prepare and lodge BASs under our direction. This same quality assurance framework can be used by employee bookkeepers to standardise the processes and quality levels of the internal BASs they prepare.

3. Professional support. If you’re stuck on a technical issue, whether it is bookkeeping, income tax or GST related, you can email your questions to us and receive professional support from our team of qualified accountants.

4. Networking opportunities. Bookkeeping can be an isolated industry, particularly when you are an employee. ABN changes that because our discussion forum gives you the opportunity to network with, and post questions to, other members all around Australia. We also realise however that some face-to-face contact is also nice, and for this reason, we regularly stage Coffee Clubs and Workshops and Conferences.

5. Thinking of going contract? ABN provides a wealth of information to the bookkeeper commencing their own business. There is information on the legal aspects, required insurances as well as plenty of useful standards, checklists and business building tips. You have the opportunity to discuss your plans on the ABN discussion forum and will inevitably get plenty of tips and encouragement from bookkeepers who have been through it all before.
